The Queen and her First Lady-in-waiting had just entered the Privy Gardens. While walking between the small bushes, Marie continued talking, or at least asking, to Rhiannon.

Tell me about your husband, did you said he was the son of the Earl of Kent?

She was grateful for the warm mantel she'd been given, as they stepped into the Privy Gardens from the Great Hall, as it was quite cold outside. Not any colder than the weather in her old home, but the mantel was much nicer than her own cloak, that she'd forgetfully left in the carriage, not thinking too much over the possibility of going outside while she was in the Palace.

She was surprised the Queen wanted to know more about Henry, she'd felt as if she'd rambled too much about her beloved husband in the first place, but if the Queen was interested in Henry's lineage perhaps she would also eventually help with the achievement of Henry's goals.

"Henry? Yes, he is the son of the Earl of Kent, his father died at the Battle of Maidstone about a year ago. His line, the Greys have been the Earls of Kent since Edmund Grey, 1st Earl of Kent, who was granted the title in 1465."

The Queen looked before her, enjoying the rest and listening to Rhiannon. So he was the son of the Earl of Kent? She wondered how the title got forfeit. If she would see him, she would certainly have a conversation with him. If he really was the son, then he should have the title of course. She looked Rhiannon.

You should be grateful that you were able to marry, in these times nothing is certain, not even marriage. I've known many people of who the marriage didn't went on because of the revolution. I wonder if I will be able to restore the former glory and peace of this Kingdom, but I fear that that is impossible...

Marie sighed and closed her eyes. There were still so many problems, people that were still pro-revolutionary and that didn't recognized the new Monarch. People were poisoned by other to have more power. This did discourage her, sometimes, but she was not a quitter. She would fight to restore the peace and might of her Kingdoms, to reach what seemed impossible to her and others.
She knew that there were much people that took advantage of her, like her father. He had not placed her on the throne to just watch and look how she did her job, like most of the other Peers probably, but to influence her. She knew this, and was constantly aware of such people. She opened her eyes again and took a deep breath, that created vapor in the cold air. The garden was white by the snow and the little pond in the middle was frozen. It was cold, but despite that it was beautiful and she loved it. She turned her head to Rhiannon next to her.

A have a question, not a personal one, but I need some advice. The French are going to occupy the Channel Islands, that have almost always been loyal to the English Crown. Now apparently it's full of Pirates, and indeed, I haven't heard a word of the English Governor of these Isles, and I can't find any briefing between him and the former King. The French call it a sort of crusade, to take them over for their Faith, the Pascal Church. I've send missives, but they won't change the mind of the leaders of the expedition. I've even sent missives to the new Pope, what almost resolved in a fight. Now, I ask your opinion concerning this matter. What should I do? Should I ignore them and let them take over it? Should I call the armies of England, that are small and wherefore I need money to finance them although the treasury is empty?

She paused thoughtfully. Rhi did not think this was a test, merely asking for advice from a companion, and it was indeed her duty to be a companion to the Queen. Surely such a position of power was a lonely life for a woman who did not seem much older than Rhi herself. So she steeled herself and tried to answer.

"I do not know much about politics, Your Majesty, I fear that's above my head, but I suppose adding my thoughts to those of your advisers can't hurt. If the treasury is empty, England can't really afford to fund the army. And we have been so torn already, and are still healing as a nation. Sending men away to fight and drawing the country into debt seems a poor choice, especially with, begging your pardon, so many who do not yet recognize your rightful authority. Perhaps then, it is best to let the French expend their own resources to fight the pirates. It is better that they fight and keep their interest there, than give them a chance to hungrily eye our somewhat weakened nation."

She made a thoughtful face then continued.
"So, if Your Majesty were to let them handle it, have to be careful of how we present it. Hmm, if you were to say that England, and Your Majesty respects their sense of religious duty that drives them to fight the pirates. Make it look not like England can't afford to fight, but that you are graciously allowing them to do so instead. Perhaps an agreement of sorts, some signed declaration that they recognize the Islands are under your sovereignty?"

Marie looked Rhiannon and smiled.

Your propositions are wise, but I fear that they will not accept that we control those Island, that they are under our sovereignty. I've already sent a message to the leader of the expeditions, who has insured my that the Islands will be under the authority of the Pascal Church, in other words he'll govern them himself. I'm still expecting a letter from the French King, hoping that he'll stop this foolish act, for it is one of his nobles that leads it.

She sighed once more and continued.

Your right of course, I do not have enough followers in England, there are a lot of people who don't recognize me. But would taking these Islands not be a sign of strength towards them and other countries? Of course, again, I can't wage war if I have no money to finance it...

"I suppose it would be a sign of strength, but how would it be funded.. if it will weaken the nation which is already so unstable...." She paused to think a bit more. "It is a shame they will not recognize your sovereignty there... it makes it seems as if they do not desire to attack it for purely religious reasons but, I know little of such things. If you wish to war then.. funding will have to be secured. How, though.. I do not know Your Majesty. Let us hope the French King chooses to intervene, then."

Rhi did not know what else to tell the Queen, it was a difficult situation that she did not envy the other woman.

The Queen looked at her hands, that were fold and lied on her legs.

Pray and hope, indeed...

Suddenly the silence was broken by a man who opened the doors of the Privy Garden and who walked towards them. It was a member of the Queen's Guard. He bowed and then he spoke to them.

Your Majesty, a new guest has arrived at the Palace and is waiting for you in the Great Hall, togheter with other people that require your attention.

The Queen sighed and nodded. The rest for today was over.

Rhiannon, you shall go to your lodgings, if that good for you. As long as you remain in my service you're fre to go almost everywhere in the Palace. I must go now, I shall call for you later.

She stood up and pointed to the Guard.

He will lead you to your lodgings.

The Queen's Guard nodded and waited until Rhiannon followed him, the Queen went out of the Gardens, to the Great Hall...

When the young Queen Elise and Rhiannon reached the Privy Gardens, they found it was summery and warm outside, a perfect day to enjoy the beautiful garden of the Palace.

As they walked, Rhiannon tried to get to know the young girl better.
"Are you the youngest in your family? I am the youngest of mine.. I have three siblings, an older brother and two older sisters," she said with a soft smile.

Elise walked next to her lady-in-waiting as they enter the privy gardens. She enjoyed the sun shining on her face and the wind softly blowing trough her hair. the sweet smell of nature, the sound of singing birds, Elise enjoyed it all.
When Rhiannon asks her a question Elise looks to her.

I am the youngest too, I have a sister and a brother.
I don't really know my brother, I haven't seen him much, but Marie was the best sister in the world.

a short period of silence followed

don't you miss you family as you are always here?

"I miss them sometimes... though my father was gone often during my childhood, serving in Parliament. I have not seen my family in over a year. I moved away when I got married... my husband is from Kent, very far from my home in Wales. We lived there before coming to live at the Palace, so I have not been to Trawsgoed in some time."

Rhiannon smiled as she took in the fresh air.
"It is nice here in the garden. I have always enjoyed nature. Where I grew up there was a beautiful river, called Ystwyth in the language of my people... and lots of woodland and open places to ride."

She smiled.
"I guess that the names probably sound funny to you... Afon Ystwyth, Trawsgoed. They are Cymraeg words.. the native language of my people.. though we speak English too," Rhi added with a grin.

Elise listened to Rhiannon and was amazed of some of the names she was using. She wandered how Rhiannon could speak them out. eastwhith, eastwith she wouldn't even try to say them but it sounded funny. The cymsomething certainely had a difficult language.

luckely you speak english too, else I would not understand you

the place Rhiannon described sounded very beatyfull but this garden was beatyfull too and here she knew what the names menth ^^

I like nature too, all the nice flowers. They smell realy nice and they are very pritty too Very Happy but not so pritty as fairies.

Elise looks at Rhiannon, her eyes were twinkling as she had gone up in what she was telling.

Rhiannon smiled at the young Queen's excitement. "Fairies, really? How wonderful!"

She was glad to see that Elise still maintained her childhood, something precious when so much power and responsibility would rest on her when she grew older.

Her eyes met Elise's and she grinned.
"You know, someone once told me that fairies especially like little girls. So they are probably more likely to visit you than they are me," she added. "They can be mischievous.. so perhaps they are already visiting you, just when you don't know it. If you dream of fairies, it means they are coming into your room when you are sleeping," she told Elise with a smile.

And if I stay awake, then I can see them?

"Maybe... though fairies can be very sneaky. If you stay awake, they might not come... they like to be hidden. In the garden sometimes you can see them just out of the corner of your eyes, but if you turn to look then they disappear," she said.

It was good to see the young girl so happy and excited... she didn't want to encourage her to stay up all night though.

oh

Elise was a little disappointed that the fairies would hide themselves, but she does looks around to see if there wouldn't be any fairies close by. She didn't see a fairy but she did saw a lovely bird.

look, you see that bird? It's so pretty Very Happy

She slowly walked towards the bird to caress it but it flies away. A few meters further it lands again and Elise runs to it in an other try. Also this time the bird flies away.

Bird doesn't want to stay

She said with a pout

"Stay still a moment, Your Majesty, I have an idea."

Rhi crossed to the nearest guard, who had been maintaining a respectful distance from the Queen while still watching over them. He nodded, and moved away.

Soon he returned with the bread crusts she had requested from the kitchen. Rhi thanked the guard and returned to the young Queen.

"Birds scare easily, but they are always hungry." Rhiannon demonstrated, tearing off a small piece of the bread crust and throwing it towards the bird. The bird soon approached the piece of bread and devoured it.

"See? Why don't you try feeding it," she said, offering Elise a bread crust.

Elise watches Rhiannon when she goes to the guard and comes back a few minutes later with a piace of bread in her hand.
She listens carefully when Rhiannon explanes why the bird would fly away. Elise smiles when the bird comes back to eat the peace of bread. It really worked. Very Happy

Elise takes the bread crust from Rhiannon and tears of a little peace to throw to the bird. If the bird eats it again she throws an other peace, a little closer to them so the bird would come closer. When the bird does so Elise smiles to Rhiannon, it really worked, the bird was comming closer to them. Very Happy Very Happy

She contiues to throw peaces of bread for the bird, every time a little closer until she commes to the last peace of bread.
She tries holding it into her hand so the bird would have to take it out of her hand. She bends donw trough her knees so her hand was close to the ground.

Rhiannon stood very still, watching the Queen, trying not to startle the bird that was coming closer.

The bread idea had worked, and now the bird was moving closer and closer with each piece of bread.

As Elise bent down, the last piece in her hand, she held her breath to see if the bird would go for it. It did! The little bird bravely hopped into Elise's hand and ate the last piece of bread.

Elise is exited when the bird came to sit on her hand but she tried to sit so still as possible. Slowly she raised her other hand in a try to stroke the bird bid then it flies away.

oohw

Then she looks back to Rhiannon still being excited about that the bird came to sit on her hand.

Did you see that? She was sitting on my hand Very Happy

"Yes, how exciting!" Rhiannon had a wide smile. It was good to see the young Queen happy.. she was glad her bread idea had worked in getting the bird to approach the girl.

Elise was so young, being her Lady in Waiting was a very different task than it was when she had been Marie's. Now, instead of dealing with a woman similar to her own age, she was caring for a child. It made her remember her desire to be a mother some day.. to give Henry an heir. She enjoyed entertaining the young queen, and hoped in the future that she would make a good mother.

Smiling at Elise, she asked,
"Is there anything else you would like to do today, in the garden or elsewhere?"

Elise stands up again and thinks a few moments about the question Rhiannon asks her. though she didn 't need to think very long about that.

Can we go to see the horses? Very Happy

Elise had always loved the horses and even though they were so big she had never been scared of them.

Catherine and Elise left the building of the Palace of Whitehall to make a walk through the Privy Gardens which were located next to it. Elise still holded her arm but walked slower now. Catherine was enjoying the outisde atmosphere, certainly with the company of the little Queen. Together they walked for a while without saying anything. Only being in the presence of each other was enough. Eventually, Catherine looked at Elise.

Do you enjoy your life here in Whitehall, Elise? I try to let you enjoy your childhood for as long as possible, although you are already a Queen.

Elise enjoyed being outsitd, she had been inside for so long. In fackt it was only a few days because of the bad weather, bur for her it seemed much longer.
And even thow it was not that warm, she enjoyed the son shining on her face. She wanted to frolic but Catherine walked very slowly, a bit to slowly if you would ask her. So she had to walk slowly too. But she had already found something to do to compensate the low tempo. She looked for fairies, maybe she would see one.
But her search is interupted when Catherine stops and starts a conversation with her, in a very serius tone.

Yes, I like it here, everybody is very nice, and marie is back, and you are here, and bear

In fackt she had everything to be happy, and because she was still a child she did not realise what responsability whas waiting for her. But the end of Catherine's sentence dindn't soud so good. She tried to let her enjoy her childhood for as long as possible? Eventhough she was a Queen. That didn't sound like something good.

can't a Queen have a happy childhood then?
